Research, Research, Research

Spend time creating a picture in your head, read magazines and look online look at others to get a rough idea of your likes and dislikes.

Look at your amazing venue, and use this as an initial guide, by considering the paint and furnishing colours. I don’t mean use this as your colour scheme – just make sure it is tied into your colour palette. Also check out previous weddings at your venue to gain inspiration or maybe understand what look you don’t want.We follow interior design sites to get inspiration… Emma Jane Events find that Wedding décor trends follow interior design trends. So if you are looking for something fresh and contemporary this is a good place to look.

Plan It Like A Pro

Select a style and colour pallet, rather than a theme or one main colour that will leave you restricted. Work with your stylist to create a mood board to bring everything together to create the finished feel.

Hiring a stylist like Emma Jane Events is not a luxury, we will work with you to create ideas and mood boards and work within your budget or provide itemised prices for you to choose from. If you do have a budget, ask your stylist how to make the most out of it.

Identify key aspects of your day and design them! Think about your day as short stories, the welcome, the vows, photo shoot, speeches, cake cutting, and first dance. A good back drop always makes an amazing picture.

Don’t rush in to buying accessories because you like them… Make sure they fit your scheme and that you need them. The last thing you need before your wedding is house full of accessories, that never get used and will not sell on. Hiring props and accessories is the cheaper, stress-free alternative.

Remember to relax! Don’t give yourself or guests the responsibility of being involved in the full set up of your venue… Leave the simple and fun parts to yourself, and get the professionals in to do the tricky and time consuming jobs, so you can get involved and enjoy the build up to the wedding with minimal stress!

Styling Ideas

Try to avoid overloading your venue with décor! Over cluttering with props can be too much and may look fussy. Simple is timeless and will always look classic.

Using ceiling hangings can transform any venue, especially one with a blank canvas like Silverholme’s Coach House. Drapes, paper lanterns, and foliage to name a few, are a few of our favourites. We recommend additional lighting such as fairy lights, festoons or Edison bulbs to create a warm atmosphere.

A main focal point such as dressed frames, or large hoops will create a wow factor for guests and will create a stunning background especially for the alter and any photo area.

Remember you can re-use props from your ceremony for other aspects of the day, there’s no need to break the bank! This not only cuts costs but ensures you get the most out of your purchase too. Emma Jane Events can be there on the day to seamlessly manage any and all transitions on your day without you realising.

Think outside the box for your centre pieces, they don’t have to be your traditional floral poesy in a vase, candlesticks and foliage is a lovely alternative.

Let’s talk about why, as a wedding photographer, I love Silverholme Manor and why you should too – especially if you’re looking for a unique, Lakeland wedding venue. Actually, I’m not going to ‘talk’ too much as hey, let’s show it in pictures …

FYI: If you’re after some information on how to pick the right wedding photographer, this I cover at the end of the blog below with a few succinct pointers. But first, why Silverholme should be your place to get married at …

Let’s start with why the manor has the perfect rooms for the bridal party to get ready – beautifully furnished, light and spacious:

Even the wallpaper is stunning throughout (for that perfect photographer’s backdrop!):

The Coach House (right next to the manor) is the perfect setting for your service:

Every wedding still needs a few of those group shots and the grounds immediately around the manor are perfect and importantly means that your guests don’t have far at all to go …

The surroundings are perfect, perfect, perfect for the Bride & Groom to go off for a few photos – rain or shine. (FYI: Because there are large woodlands on the grounds it means that even if it’s chucking it down – it does on occasion in the Lakes – we can still get out, protected by the tree canopies.)

Indoors in the manor offers even more photo opportunities …

One of the big advantages of going with Silverholme, as opposed to a hotel, is that you can totally put your own stamp on your wedding – every wedding I have covered at Silverholme has been unique …

Well, I must have sold Silverholme to you by now …?!!!

So, looking for that decent wedding photographer…

I’ll try to keep it short and sweet:

• Ask the venue for ones they recommend – they recommend them because they know they’re good;
• Do of course ‘Google’ too and don’t forget to look at Google images too – do a search for example on ‘Silverholme Wedding’ and pics that stand out for you you can then easily go to the linked webpage to research that photographer more;
• Don’t scrimp on the photographer – you generally get what you pay for! – and remember your photographs (apart from your memories) are what you’ll have left at the end to remind you of your amazing day;
• If possible meet face-to-face (or at least Skype if the distance is too great) to get a feel for them. A photographer is a big part of your day – it’s your day and make sure the photographer understands that!
• Research the photographer. Don’t just rely on testimonials on their website – look at Google reviews, Facebook etc;
• Another thing I always say, as you delve through their website, is are there any errors on the site (images not loading, grammar, spelling etc). This might sound a bit petty but if they can’t be bothered making sure their ‘shop-front’ is perfect then what about your photos …?

There’s always more I could add but the main thing is you’ll get that ‘feeling’ when you’ve found the right one! 🙂

Earlier in the year I had the opportunity to photograph Kym and Liam’s beautiful wedding at Silverholme Manor with their ceremony in the newly refurbished, light and airy coach house.

Here are a few tips to ensure you and your guests enjoy your wedding day to the max and get the photographs you want to remember your time there!

Choose your photographer carefully

Your photographer will be with you throughout your wedding day, so as well as choosing one whose style of photography you like, also take the time to check they are someone you can trust and will get on with! You can get some sense of what they’re like from talking to them before you book, but it’s also worth asking your planner who will best suit your personality and the style of your wedding. You can also check photographers’ reviews to see what others say. Do reviews comment on how they put people at ease? Do they mention that guests found them friendly? Do reviews mention their flexibility as well as professionalism?

Be prepared to enjoy your day

If you’re coming to Silverholme before your wedding day, arrange to meet with your chosen photographer to go through all the details of your day. Your photographer will be able to help you plan to ensure you get the photographs you want without you feeling rushed or your guests feeling bored!

Once your photographer knows all your plans for your wedding day, not only will they be able to anticipate and get the shots of all those little moments you’ve planned for, but they can also help keep things relaxed and on track and answer any questions your guests may have about what’s happening during the day.

While you’re there, your pre-wedding consultation is also a great time for a mini photoshoot so you and your photographer can get used to working with each other and so you’ll feel more relaxed on the day as you’ll know what to expect. As a bonus you’ll get a few engagement shots taken at your wedding venue to use to build the anticipation for the big day!

Don’t worry about the weather

Silverholme Manor is a great place for a wedding in all seasons and whatever the weather. Of course, being set in the Lake District means you should be prepared for any weather at all times of year.

But don’t panic, there are plenty of spots for beautiful indoor portraits at Silverholme and even more opportunities in the grounds or down by the lake if you’re up for it. Your photographer will certainly be ready to get some great shots for you indoors or outdoors, in any season, in all conditions and at any time of day!

If you’re the sort of person that likes to embrace the elements, your photographer will have umbrellas to keep dry(ish!) if it rains, but it’s worth bringing a wrap or shawl, even in the summer, in case there’s a breeze blowing off the lake. And, if you want some lakeside shots down at Grubbins Point, it might be worth having some comfortable shoes to change into too! That way you’ll be able to get some amazing portraits with the fabulous Lake District backdrop whatever the weather!

And then, if it turns out to be one of the many beautiful, sunny days we get at all times of year, that’s even better!

Having planned for a relaxed wedding, it’s really important to take your time on the day to enjoy it to its fullest. Your day will go by so quickly, so just pause and take a breath from time to time during the day, so you can take it all in!

Bonus tip – Don’t rely on the digitals!

After the wedding, you’ll want to keep all those amazing photographs of your Silverholme Manor wedding to be enjoyed for generations to come. So whether you have your digital images delivered on a USB drive or download them directly from an online gallery, it’s well worth getting a hard copy of your favourite pictures, either in the form of prints or as an album, so you will always be able to enjoy them, even if changes in technology render your digital versions obsolete in the future!

I’m a wedding photographer based in York but love to travel to the beautiful Lake District to shoot weddings. My style is relaxed and creative and I love to work with laid-back couples who value the importance of photography on their day and want beautiful photographs but don’t want to spend the day posing and making their guests wait around for formal group shots.!

Silverholme is the perfect venue for me to shoot at because it manages to balance being spectacularly beautiful as well as enabling its guests to feel relaxed and at ease in the comfortable spaces. The venue has so many options for photographs so that no wedding will look the same. I love to capture the fun and excitement of the preparations in the stunning suites, the ceremony as it happens in whichever area you choose, lots of fun candid shots of the reception on the lawn if you’re lucky with the weather, or in a marquee if you choose.

I love to sneak off the new Mr and Mrs for a little bit of alone time when we’ll capture some couple portraits with the incredible backdrops of Lake Windermere, the rolling hills and beautiful Silverholme itself. Your day will fly by in a blur of guests and fun so this is a really special time for couples to take a breath and have some time out for just the two of you. I won’t keep you too long though as I don’t want the photos to dominate your day!

Don’t worry if you’re camera shy: I’ll capture you as you are naturally and we’ll have a good laugh along the way!

Instalment number 3 is here! It’s safe to say the Graythwaite team are pretty food orientated, so we may be a little bias when we say it’s one of our favourite insights so far… scroll down to hear from one of our fabulous approved caterers, Campbell & Rowley!

Food is a big part to anyone’s day, but on a wedding day – it’s even more important!

My name is Heather and I am one of the event managers for Campbell & Rowley Catering & Events LTD. We’ve been working at Silverholme for almost 3 years now and it is certainly one of our favourite venues!

When it comes to wedding catering, no two couples are the same. Everyone has their own individual style and taste and we love to be able to make that shine through the wedding breakfast. Anything from getting the guests involved in a traditional sit down 3 course to throwing tradition out the window and having a complete street food theme throughout the day, we’ve seen and done it all at Silverholme and the venue just laps it up. It’s so versatile and flexible it really lends itself to your imagination!

With any wedding book or magazine you pick up there will always be a time line in there almost dictating when you should be organising what. To be honest (having organised my own wedding as well as many others) the time line is drawn up by what you deem as most important. Once you’ve got your venue booked you will find that things begin to fall into place. So long as you let your chosen caterer know you definitely want them on that given day (weddings are becoming more and more organised!) details can be drawn up way in advance or as close as 8 weeks before the wedding depending on how organised you want to be.

One of the biggest tips I could ever give someone when thinking through want they might want to eat on their big day – it’s your day.

Yes there might be you’re Aunt Margery who doesn’t like her potatoes cooked a certain way, or your friends son who will under no circumstances eat anything other than pasta and chicken nuggets – without sounding rude it’s so important to remember it’s your day. You are the one paying for everything and if you love a turkey dinner in the middle of summer then go for it! Do what makes you happy! We cater for all dietary needs (and believe me there are more than you know!) so don’t ever panic thinking you’re being selfish when you’re choosing your menu. Pick the food that you love and you know you’ll remember when you look back in a few years time. People say you remember the bad food at a wedding, on the contrary – your guests will always remember the great food at a wedding!

Trying to catch a moment to yourselves during the day is very fleeting. However the moment I adore to see at every wedding is the moment before the bride and groom are announced into the wedding breakfast. All the guests are sat eagerly awaiting thier arrival and announcement as the new Mr & Mrs, and it’s at this moment the newly weds actually get a minute together, just the two of them. A minute to talk about family members, or the photo by the lake they’ve just had or even just to say how truly beautiful the bride looks. Cherish little moments like these through out the day as it’s so important. The day is all about the two of you so it’s only right you can have a few moments of peace together.

All in all the day is about you and who and what you love! And everyone loves food!

When it comes to getting married at Silverholme Manor there’s only one thing we have in mind, relaxing! Our long weekend wedding package, commencing 3pm Friday and coming to a close for 10am Monday, means there’s plenty of time to settle in before the big day and to recover after the big night!

We appreciate that a relaxed wedding is not always as simple as it sounds however, and so we have teamed up with a whole host of our wonderful recommended suppliers to create The Silverholme Wedding Blog.

For the next two months we’ll be publishing our top tips and insights into the big day. Our aim is to highlight all the little things you can do in the run up to ensure your day is as relaxed as possible and to point out all the little things you sometimes miss on the day itself, to ensure you make the most of every minute of the big day!

So, without furtherado here is our first instalment from the wonderful Rachel Joyce, enjoy!

About Me

Hi, I’m Rachel. I’m a wedding photographer based in the North West and I’m lucky enough to shoot lots of weddings in the Lake District. I visited Silverholme for a wedding for the first time this year and now I’m absolutely smitten! It’s my idea of the perfect wedding venue.

I love working with relaxed couples who are planning something a little bit different for their wedding day and that’s why Silverholme appeals to me so much. I love that it works just as well for smaller weddings as larger ones – my couple, Emily and Michael, tied the knot in the sitting room, surrounded by their friends and family and it was so cosy and intimate! With everyone staying in the house or the nearby cottages the whole day had a holiday vibe!

Planning the Perfect Timeline 

Wedding timelines –  doesnt sound like the most exciting bit of wedding planning that you’re ever going to do but my biggest tip for couples planning their big day is to put together the perfect timeline in advance. It’s something that most couples don’t really start thinking about early in their wedding planning journey but after photographing 200+ weddings I know a well thought out timeline can help make your wedding day run smoothly and achieve that perfect relaxed vibe.

The alternative – a wedding day that feels rushed, or one with huge lulls where your guests starting feeling a bit fed up and the energy seeps away. (We’ve all been to weddings like that!) They also help make sure all your suppliers are on the same page so we can work together like a well oiled machine.

Wherever you’re holding your wedding, a well planned out timeline is super important but even more so when you’ve chosen a venue as beautiful as Silverholme for your wedding day. It’d be a crime to miss out on all the amazing photo opportunities or not to have the time to enjoy your amazing surroundings because you were rushing through your day.

Here’s my top tips for planning the perfect wedding timeline.

The Morning 

Check with your hair and make up team what time they need to start on the morning. Brides if you’ve chosen a big bridal squad be prepared for an early start! Silverholme is such a perfect venue for getting ready on the morning of your wedding. The bridal suite is huge – big enough for operation hair and makeup. What’s more it’s beautifully lit – with two huge windows filling the room with natural light. Photographers and make up artists LOVE natural light. It makes everything look better!

If you don’t fancy everyone in the room with you there’s also sitting rooms downstairs you can use for getting ready too and you can sneak off to the bridal suite for a bit of peace and quiet!

The Ceremony 

It’s very important to choose a good time for your wedding ceremony. Too early and the day feels dragged out. Too late and you’ll find everything is smushed into a few hours and is over before you know it! If you’re having the whole day in the same venue then a ceremony time of 1 or 2 p.m. is perfect. If you’re travelling between church and venue then you might want to go for a slightly earlier ceremony to accommodate for the extra travelling time.

It’s really important to get to your ceremony on time. The whole ‘it’s the bride’s prerogative to be late’ doesn’t cut it any more I’m afraid! Registrars in particular will have more than one ceremony to perform on a day so they don’t take kindly to be kept waiting for no reason. If you’ve chosen to get ready at Silverholme and you’re holding your ceremony there too (and why wouldn’t you – it’s bloody gorgeous!) then you really don’t need to worry about this too much. A short walk down the stunning staircase and you’re there! But if you’ve decided on a church venue then make sure you leave ample to time to get there.

Plan to be ready 30 minutes before you need to set off and plan on setting off early too. The last thing you want is last minute panic and fluster because time has run away from you. Check to make sure there’s no events or planned road closures on your route that might affect your timings. If you find yourself with time to spare it’s the perfect opportunity for a glass of fizz with everyone before you head out.

After the ceremony 

This is the first danger zone for wedding timings going astray. If you’re having a church wedding you might be planning to head out of church and dash straight to your wedding venue for the drinks reception. This WILL NOT HAPPEN! Unless you are completely militant and ignore everyone, you will find that all your guests want to hug you, kiss you and congratulate you at this time. It often turns into something of an impromptu receiving line as you greet guests as they leave church and this can easily add another 20 minutes onto your timeline. If that’s not been factored in it can knock everything out of schedule.

My tip – add this into your timeline and ENJOY it. It’s one of my favourite parts of a wedding day – you’ve just got married! Emotions are running high, everyone is beaming and hugging you and each other. It’s an absolute treat to photograph and some of my favourite natural wedding images usually come from this part of the day.

The good news is, if you’re planning to hold your wedding ceremony at Silverholme, then this part of the day naturally becomes part of your drinks reception which makes it even smoother. All the above happens – the kissing, the hugs, the smiles – it just takes place whilst everyone has a glass of fizz in their hands!

Before Your Meal (also known as the drinks reception) 

This is a busy busy part of the day for your wedding photographer. During this time we’ve usually got a lot of images to tick off the list – your family group shots, your portraits, lots of lovely natural and relaxed images of your guests enjoying themselves and some pictures of your wedding breakfast room all set up. All these shots are important to you – we know that – which is why you must make sure you’ve factored enough time into your timeline to make sure they happen.

I always advise my couples to make sure there is at least an hour and a half set aside for the drinks reception when you arrive at your wedding venue (or from when your ceremony finishes if you’re having everything in one place). The last thing I want to do is rush you off straightaway for portraits and group shots. I want you to mingle with your guests on the lawn overlooking the lake, I want to wander the round the beautiful house, capturing images of your friends and family enjoying the beautiful interiors of Silverholme, I want to grab pictures of your guests playing lawn games or the kids swinging in the trees. If you want beautiful, natural, informal shots of you and your guests at your wedding, this is where a lot of them will happen. Make sure you factor in enough time for this. Not only do you get a lot of beautiful images – you also get the chance to actually enjoying spending time with your guests!

The Group Shots 

Back in t’day, wedding photography was dominated by formal and stuffy portraits. No more! Hooray. But group shots and family shots are still an important part of your day for sure. Although I advise my couples to keep them to a minimum (we’ve all been to those weddings where the group shots take 2 hours – snoreville!) I do still encourage them to have a few important ones. As a wedding photographer, group shots can cause some logistical issues – especially due to the weather!

One of the wonderful things about Silverholme is that there are beautiful spots both inside and out for group shots. On a dry day you can choose from pictures in front of the house which is stunning or on the lawn with the lake in the background but the good news is that if it’s raining (as it quite often does in the Lakes!) you’ve still got so many interior spots for group pictures meaning you don’t have to compromise.

If you’re planning 6-8 different groups (which is ample) then make sure you put aside around 30 minutes for those. To make sure they get some quickly and smoothly pre-warn people that they will be needed for pictures so they don’t disappear just when they are needed and ask your bridesmaids or groomsmen to be on hand to help round people up. Quick as a flash, you’ll be finished and back to enjoying your day with your friends and family.

The Portraits 

If you book a wedding venue as beautiful as Silverholme then I imagine you’re already planning some pictures around the grounds to take advantage of that backdrop! Most of my couples want some cracking pictures of just the two of them, but don’t want to turn the day into a huge and elaborate photoshoot.

I ask for two 15 minute sessions with my couples to create some magic! One just after we’ve finished group shots and one in the evening. 15 minutes does not feel like a huge amount of time, but because Silverholme is so self contained and has so many beautiful spots for pictures within a stones throw of each other you can really take advantage of the backdrops and scenery and the interior of the house too. Having a second photo session in the evening means being able to enjoy the gorgeous evening light, perhaps with a trip down to the jetty or with a little wander in the woods as the sunlight steams through the trees. (I’m a wedding photographer – I get excited by delicious light!)

Portraits might be your ideal of hell – I mean it’s not the type of thing most couples do naturally! But having that 15 minutes away from your guests, just the two of you, is wonderful. The day is so busy that you’ll barely get chance to speak to each otherwise. Making sure you’ve factored some time into your timeline for portraits is super important. If we’re rushing for time, you’ll feel rushed and that will reflect in your images. Give me 15 minutes and you’ll get images of you both looking chilled, relaxed, love up and having a great time on your wedding day.

The Evening 

The ceremony, drinks reception, groups shots and portraits are done, the meal has been demolished, speeches have been spoken. Everyone is fed, watered and ready to dive into the evening. Timings at this point are still important. You want to leave enough of a gap between the end of the meal and the start of the first dance to allow guests to go and refresh themselves, the staff at the venue to prepare the room, the DJ or band to set up and for that second set of portraits to happen. But you don’t want to leave toooooo long that people start feeling dozy or the energy seeps away.

Aim to have your first dance at around 8 p.m ish so that guests can get on the dance floor straight after and the party will start! If you’ve booked a full day of wedding photography this means that most photographers will stay for a while after the first dance to get some cracking images of your guests partying.
